a lane that leads up a steep hill from the town of Totnes in Devon that is called Fishchowters or  possibly cheaters. The name comes from the belief that it was used by people carrying fish between the towns of Totnes and Dartmouth to avoid paying a tax. For me the walk along this lane is exhilarating, a steep hill with wonderful views. as you can see I started this drawing with some found pigments I found on the path, it helps me begin with a free and energetic style.

This is a pastel drawing on Fabriano Artistico paper and is larger than many of my landscapes.I Use Rembrandt pastels and have really enjoyed exploring the colours here. The sounds of making the work, the feel of soft  pastels on this firm and quite “toothy” paper is a source of real pleasure, like the view across the devon hills.
