Glimpse across the Dart
Drawn initially on the banks of the river Dart, the reed bed on the Sharpham estate. A place that has great meaning personally for me. This tiny work started as a print from the earth monoprints of reeds, I identified a part of that print that work to give a portrayal of the view that was in front of me. Pressing a small piece of paper down to lift “view” before tucking it away in my dilapidated old music case to take home to the studio.
The small emerging image must be fixed before a pastel ground is gently brushed on to the surface. The tiny scratch marks that the reed stems used whilst on site are preserved.
This little piece was a joy to make, using pastels and pencils (mainly 8b) and some fine willow charcoal. Working at this tiny scale means my ear is close to the surface of the paper and the soft sounds of mark making make me smile every time.
