A Path Way
The reed beds on the banks of the river Dart at Sharpham hold a special place in my heart. This work was started by making monoprints of the reeds using the wet earth that was on site. A wet morning in May, in many ways a typical late spring morning. The feel and sound of coating reeds in wet earth and then laying them on paper and enjoying what emerges. Rich in texture and yet the simplicity of form is so rewarding.
The “prints” are taken back to the studio and dried and flattened to prepare for the next part of the process. The surface of the paper has to be fixed and then pastel ground can be gently brushed over the surface. The use of soft pastels across the roughened surface that the earth has created means that the sound of pastel being applied is scratchy, the 8b pencil marks make a sharper sound, the charcoal is seemingly more silent. The process draws one in with all it’s sounds and feelings.
After the drawing was completed I bonded the two pieces of paper together on to a uniform substrate of paper.
