A lovely bunch of daffodils purchased on the market last Friday, are in full bloom as they stand in a discarded coffee pot. I do love the grey green stems and the trumpet like blooms. There is a rhythm to the flower heads as they jostle for position in the shiny coffee pot. I wanted to put the lemon in this still life to make sure I would carefully observe the reflections and to increase the diagonal draw of the eye for the viewer.

The daffodil has some fine names here in the U.K and there are all sorts of regional variations; Trumpets in Yorkshire, Scrambled eggs in Somerset, Nebbits in Norfolk. Daffidowndilly in Buckinghamshire and Cumberland, Julians on the Isle of Wight, Lents in Cornwall and Butter-and-eggs in Devon.

Along the river Dart at a place called Longmarsh, a nice flat walk along the bank of the river where there are many benches to sit on, places to consider and think whilst watching the passing tidal water. Each year on the 22nd January, I walk to find the first wild daffodils of the year. They flower for my late father’s birthday and it gives me  time to ponder his life peacefully comforted with Nature’s blessing.

Having set up this still life up, with the coffee pot reflecting the lemon, I became so entranced whilst drawing that I completely lost the track of time. This is what I particularly enjoy about the creative process, it is the making rather than an end goal within a deadline that is so enriching.
