This work is layered, on to a raw canvas. I placed reeds from the saltmarsh and bonded them together with a layer of Japanese paper. I was then able to allow some time for the layers to dry before adding a coat of pastel ground. This allow the pastels to adhere to a surface that might otherwise be to fine to hold the pigments. The shapes of the reeds and the ridges under the paper “grabbed” at the pastels as I drew. By this I mean, the soft pastels were getting caught against the ridges that I had placed. You can see exactly what I mean in the short video I made to explain the method, the making is the joy, the sensations of the process are for me very personal.
