February Bud Formation

This is a pastel drawing on paper and it was a joy to draw. I am doing some observational drawings of these white hyacinths as they emerge from bulb, to bud, to flower and then to start making seed again.

Using soft pastel on quite a toothed Fabriano paper is mesmerising and yet challenging. The sounds and the feel of putting pastel marks down on the surface of the paper are so absorbing. Studying the changes in the bulbs and the growth each day is certainly fascinating in late February. I am noticing the way the plants wrap around the emergent flowers, the angles and the characters of the bulbs producing unique flowers.

Vivid greens combined with the white yellow energy of new growth set against the russet bulbs and dark soil.A cloth around a white bowl adds a shot of warmth. I use the background to help orientate myself to the negative spaces as I draw.
