These beautiful fruits sung out to me from the market stall today. I could not resist the urge to draw them. Pomegranates are rich in symbolism in almost every culture. From the story of Persephone to through symbolism of fertility these fruits have always been seen as rather special.

I do remember the ripening fruits from time spent during my childhood in south eastern Spain, in an old farmhouse without running water or electricity. We used to use an old diesel generator for both electricity and to pump water from the well to a water tower above the ramshackle farmhouse.I also remember the pomegranates growing in Italy, when I lived and worked in Tuscany. Melograno is the Italian word for pomegranate or more correctly melograna. The famous Officina Profumo Farmaceutica di Santa Maria Novella have a scent named “Melograno”  described as an “oriental blend with citrus and spicy notes”.

This is drawn on mixed media paper in Shuttleart alcohol markers which I have discovered are so liberating to use.
