Four Pears

The local market this morning, in Totnes, offered up some lovely subjects for still life practice. These four Packham pears appealed as much as a nice bag of greengages. As you may know I like to draw quite angular fruits…the varied shapes are important, as much as the slightly hard to place colour. I like looking into the symbolism of fruits too. So I arranged these fruits on a plate from the kitchen. A hand made plate from Southern Italy, I hope I have captured the movement that the plate lends to the fruits.

Pears are rich in symbolism, representing a variety of concepts across different cultures and time periods. They are often associated with fertility, femininity, sensuality and prosperity due to their abundance and shape, which can resemble the female form. In some traditions, they symbolize longevity, good health, and even immortality. Additionally, pears can represent affection, wisdom, and divine sustenance.

This is a pastel drawing on paper and it was a joy to draw.
