Looking Back
This smaller landscape of the river Dart looking up river toward the Dartington Estate was drawn using natural found pigments on the banks of the river. Glimpses of these found pigments are seen in the drawing, capturing the essence of the season and place.
Gestural mark making is counter balanced by blocks of russet red and cooler grey blues of the sky and the river. I have used this technique for many years and found that the freedom of adding found pigment releases an energy into the work. I just adore the feel of it too. When dried and ready to work into the surface catches the pastels and snaps the fine willow charcoal tips. The sensations of drawing these is invigorating and cathartic at the same time.
