The reeds at Sharpham marsh on the river Dart is a place that I have drawn on many occasions. As I keep my visual diary of the ever changing seasons this place has stood out. The changing tides that rise and fall. The incoming tides bringing life and food for all sorts of creatures. The wildlife here in fact is really very special.

By drawing initially with found pigments that are site specific and using “tools” fashioned from what is at hand I then start to draw. You can see the last picture shows how I initiate a work. This approach gives me an affinity to both the place and season. This was a cold day and pigment was really cold. The sharpness of a reed tore my ungloved hand. I used reed seed heads and leaves to ‘print’ on to the paper. reed stems to make marks where the found pigments began to dry in the wind. This rawness attaches me to the place, providing material for paintings.

Do have a little look at the short reel that I put here so you can see the textures and process of this style of “emergent” work, that employs a very tactile and sensual activity of the moment.
