I go to the local market each week to do the family shopping, it’s only a two minute walk away. I enjoy observing the changing seasons through looking at what is available in season. Each fruit has its own charm and attraction, these green gages caught my eye by the waxy bloom and the flecks of blue and yellow on their skins.
I placed the fruits in this pretty Italian hand made and glazed bowl and put a patterned cloth to add movement and help me describe the bowl. I lay out the drawing in charcoal and then add pastel colours as I go.
The symbolism of this fruit is of happiness, pleasure and the sweetness of life… the English phrase “as merry as a green gage’…….hence the title.
This is pastel on paper and was a joy to draw.
