Midwinter Marsh
It is always a real treat to visit this litttle spot by the river Dart, whatever the weather there is always something so energising about this place. The sounds of wildlfe, the changing colours and light, the tides. I really enjoy how each season provides such a feast for the senses, in texture and atmosphere, ryhthm and emotions.
This small drawing is on a Daler Rowney paper and was initiated using found pigments, a small puddle of water and some dead fallen reed stems. I relished every moment of my two hours alone drawing and printing on to various surfaces with materials that nature had provided.
When I carry these primary sketches back to the studio I am always excited to see what I have captured whilst worked briskly in my own world creating. A kin perhaps to taking a photograph and watching develop in a dark room. With the surface of the drawing fixed I can add to the abundance of marks using pastels or charcoal in the studio. I make sure the original “field marks” are preserved as they are part of this layering process .
