This is a very beautiful woodland within the Dartmoor National Park. Throughout the seasons the landscape from Dartmoor along the river down to the sea has fascinated me. This spring view, was drawn using mixed media and on to the heavy paper I added some gesso to provide more texture to the surface.

This piece differs from it sister Primavera, Dartmoor, in that I was really taken by the crumbling earth that had fallen from the edge of the fence. The rhythm of the trees going back into woodland echoed the strands of tusk grass. I wanted draw the views attention to multitude of surfaces and textures that this spot had to offer. The fallen soil that is bottom of the drawing gives way to the grasses within which one can make the posts for the barbed wire fence. Yet the background of the picture is made up of the shadows and trunks of trees that intermittently caught the light sparks yellow, green and pink against a soft blue grey.

Suspended halfway up on the left is a small stand of yellow gorse. Gorse is in places to serve as a gateway to the Otherworld, and maybe a place where fairies and spirits dwell. Gorse bears flowers all year round and as they say “when gorse is in flower kissing is in season”.
