Winter is a time to reflect on the year that has passed, to plan a garden or think of family. The land is often wet or windy, perhaps with ice and snow. Hence I use site specific pigments and found tools made from reeds or sticks, perhaps a feather. Looking far across the tidal reed beds toward the distant hills and eventually Dartmouth. Pushing my fingers beneath the grass to find the cold damp soil with which to start this little drawing, I focus on the colours and soft tones of winter. Everything looks wet and cold, patches of colour like the russet of bracken or some grasses caught in the light play against the blue shadows under the beeches. The story symbolises the moon’s nightly vigil and the cyclical of nature of dreams and life. Though this piece was drawn three years ago, when I walked there on a frosty during November 2025, not much had changed. I nicknamed this place Endymion’s rest.\u003cbr\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe field below where this was drawn does not see much sunlight in the winter months, a copse of mature beech trees stands to the right of the path casting a long shadow.The path leads down the reed bed through a pair of gates and to the river. High tides do come to around four to five metres of water. Much of this land is undergoing a programme of rewilding now which something I van document through my work. It is believed that these walls were built to improve the navigation up water to the port of Totnes. The walls were built by French prisoners of war during the Napoleonic wars. Where the walls have crumbled the river has encroached, bringing with it the “rebirth” of the Saltmarshes to specific spots. Some believe the wall should be repaired, others believe Nature should take her course. This is celebrated in the Orthodox Church just after Valentine’s Day, it marks forty days after the Orthodox Christmas Day which falls on the 7th of January. In the winter there are an abundance of root crops such as carrots, beetroot and swede. There are wooden boxes filled with greens and brassicas, cabbages, purple sprouting broccoli and leeks. The fruits grown locally include autumn harvested pears and apples, large rather tart, green cooking apples like Bramley’s. What I always look out for in January are the Seville oranges for making marmalade. They are also used for the “citrus notes” in many gins, so I am told. These bitter fruits are packed with pectin which is key to a well set marmalade.In the U.k the fruits are mainly shipped from Seville in Andalusia during the period of January and February. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI placed a few oranges in one of our Italian soup bowls and placed two in the foreground to counter balance the accent of blue of the ceramic handle.The fruits have hints of green and touches of yellow.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThese are drawn with marker pens on paper to give a more graphic and energised image.
